Nature of project: In 2002, the Gay and Lesbian Archives of South Africa (GALA) commissioned the development of an historical tour of ’gay Johannesburg’ for the International Lesbian and Gay Association annual convention being hosted that year by the city. The tour, which is now available to any organisation or individuals through GALA, takes the visitor on a trail through Johannesburg and Soweto, past places of historical and contemporary significance, with the intention of showing the way that the gay experience is woven into the very fabric of the city.
